Recent decades’ economic advancement in China has boosted rapidly growing demands of better education. When coupled with the huge population base, it triggered the frenzy of building newer and ever larger schools for primary and secondary education in the last few years. These gigantic new schools often have to be designed and built at once with record breaking speed, instead of growing and expanding naturally as traditionally how a school would have developed.

Located on the banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai’s West Bund, Tank Shanghai converts five abandoned aviation fuel tanks and their surroundings into a new type of contemporary art and cultural center seamlessly combining art, nature and urban life. Integrated into the urban landscape with an unprecedented attitude of openness, accessibility and humility, Tank Shanghai transforms containers of fuel into containers of culture while paying tribute to the site’s industrial past.

Over the past decade, theaters have sprung up everywhere in China in tandem with the country’s economic boom and rapid urbanization. Most have extravagant appearances but single functions and monotonous spaces, and they are often detached from the public and real urban life, becoming a tremendous waste of public resources. OPEN won the competition to design the first theater in Pingshan, a new urban district in Shenzhen municipality. This gave us a chance to take a critical look at the development of Chinese theaters and to explore new possibilities.

North of Beijing, in a valley famous for hosting remnants of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall—a Chapel of Sound.

When humanity is forced to settle on Mars, might we at last rethink the way we live today?

去探索建筑与产品融合的可能;
去探索设计可以如何影响与引导未来的生活;

Two art museums on a quiet beach along the coast of Bohai Bay in northern China: one hidden in the sand dunes, like mysterious caves; one rising out of the sea, like a solitary rock. A long walkway in between connects the sand and the sea, the art and the people. The two museums create a silent dialogue by the sea.

On a quiet beach along the coast of northern China’s Bohai Bay, the UCCA Dune Art Museum is carved into the sand, where it gently disappears.

This is an exceptional exhibition design, fittingly corresponds to the large-scale group exhibition’s theme: The New Normal.

This is an art installation OPEN designed for the “Soul of City” Exhibition at Marmomac 2017, which invited designers from seven different countries to collaborate with some of Italy’s finest stone manufacturers and interpret their own understanding of the given theme, using a single building material – natural stone. The exhibition would only last four days, and stone is a rather heavy building material.
