The initial design brief for this project along the shore of Yantai, the coastal city at the tip of Shandong peninsula, was amazingly simple – the local municipality, a former industrial district now aspires to foster a better living for its rapidly growing population, wanted something unique to enhance its ocean front.

Situated in a new district of Suzhou city, the Shanfeng Academy will serve as the campus-center for a new K-12 international school and will also act as a cultural hub for the local community.

Out of all the buildings on the Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School Campus designed by OPEN, the Sports Center gives the greatest impression of lightness—two round-cornered, translucent volumes floating above a transparent box. Inside this glass box is the school’s canteen, and above it, seemingly suspended within two rectangular “Air Capsules”, are the campus gymnasium and swimming pool.

OPEN's competition entry for Shenzhen Maritime Museum, the Icebergs and the Sea, is one of the three winning schemes chosen by a jury panel from schemes of 15 prominent international architectural teams.

Resting at the base of a valley famous for holding remnants of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall—a Chapel of Sound. Deftly evoking its natural surroundings, this small semi-outdoor concert hall pursues the experience of sound in its purest form—collecting, reflecting, and resonating nature itself.

Compare to other skyscrapers in Wuhan, the city which strives for the higher and higher buildings, Sky-City, a 150-meter high office building with a commercial base, pays more attention on the balances among the skyscraper, the city, and the inhabitants. Situated on a small site abutting major streets on 3 sides in Hankou, the design resolves many conflicting constraints while trying to push the limit of a private development in contributing to the public urban lives.

Pinghe Bibliotheater is the core of OPEN’s latest project—School as Village/Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School. A library, a theater, and a black box interlock together like a Chinese puzzle to form this characteristic building that some call ‘the blue whale’ while others see it an ocean liner. The unique form of the building and the free-flowing spaces not only cultivate the students’ interests in reading and performing, but also encourage their imagination to roam freely in the ocean of knowledge.

The design of the Qingpu Pinghe International School campus—an organic constellation of unique smaller buildings, linked by thoughtfully designed landscape elements—is a direct response to the widespread prevalence of over-scaled, generic school complexes in China.

In tandem with China’s economic boom and rapid urbanization, theaters have sprung up throughout the country in the past decade. Most have extravagant exteriors, but are often spatially monotonous and far detached from the general public and everyday urban life, greatly underutilizing the tremendous public resources invested in them.

Along the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River, five decommissioned aviation fuel tanks once stood abandoned on a dilapidated industrial site. Today, these tanks and the surrounding site—forgotten relics of the city's former Longhua Airport—have been given new life and relevancy. Over the course of six years, together with the newly created underground space that connects the tanks, and two separate gallery spaces dotted in the surrounding landscape, these iconic tanks were transformed from fuel containers into a vibrant new art and cultural center.
