OPEN's latest project Shanfeng Academy in Suzhou, China has been completed. Situated in a new district of Suzhou, Shanfeng Academy is the cultural and sports center for a K-12 school, while serving the local community as an active cultural hub. The design features five buildings connected by flat-roofed walkways, creating voids in the form of four gardens. The voids provide breathable spaces for the high-density campus and act as un-inked areas in traditional Chinese landscape drawings. Serving nearly 2000 students, Shanfeng Academy provides a diverse mix of cultural and sports programs, including theater, gallery, library, sports center, dance and fitness rooms, swimming pool, and café.
OPEN’s latest project, TANK Shanghai, has opened to the public on March 23rd. Located in Shanghai’s West Bund, the project transforms an abandoned airport into a vibrant urban art park woven around five decommissioned oil tanks. OPEN's design reinvents these industrial relics as galleries and other spaces for contemporary art and culture. TANK Shanghai has been featured in the 2018 Arts Preview of The New York Times and listed as one of the most anticipated art museums by a number of influential worldwide art and architectural media. Opening alongside the art center are three inaugural exhibitions: a group show of Chinese contemporary artists, Under Construction, a solo show of Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas, and the first Shanghai show of the Japanese art collective TeamLab: Universe of Water Particles in the Tank.
After more than three years, OPEN’s UCCA Dune Art Museum has been completed. Located on a quiet stretch of beach in Qinhuangdao, the museum quietly disappears underneath the dunes into which it is carved— creating an intimate space for art hidden between the sea and the sand.
Commissioned by Aranya and operated by the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, China’s leading independent contemporary art institution, the UCCA Dune will be a significant new destination in the Chinese art world. A ceremony held at the museum on October 13th, 2018 celebrated the opening of both the building and its inaugural exhibition, After Nature.
The first stage of OPEN’s Tank Shanghai has been completed, with the project's eastern and southern parklands recently inaugurated and opened to the public, alongside the newly completed riverside Project Space. On June 29th this unique Project Space, rebuilt on the site of the former industrial site's firefighting pump room, celebrated the opening of its inaugural exhibition, “I Do (Not) Want To be Part of Your Celebration”, with an evening gala.
OPEN’s Tsinghua Ocean Center in Shenzhen is recently completed after five years’ time from design to construction. Located at the eastern end of Tsinghua graduate school campus in Shenzhen Xili University Town, it was designed for the newly established deep-ocean research base of Tsinghua University. Science, Humanity and Nature are the three main themes of the design. While accomplishing all the lab and office functions, abundant social spaces were injected into this energetic ‘vertical campus’.
OPEN’s Ocean Center (The Deep Ocean Innovation Base of Tsinghua University Graduate School at Shenzhen) topped out on June 15th, 2015.
The Ocean Center is made up of 5 leading research centers of deep ocean science in China. The 60 meters-high-building is standing on the eastern end of the grand axis of the campus, right next to the main gate. OPEN’s “vertical campus” design strategy will make the building not only be a new type of research labs with high efficiency, but also a dynamic social energizer on the end of the grand axis of the campus.
The secretary and dean of Tsinghua University Graduate School at Shenzhen, the deputy director of Public Works Bureau, the general manager of Contractor Huashi, the leaders of Local Design Institute iBR, the leaders of supervising units and Li Hu, the principal architect of OPEN, attended the topping-out ceremony at 10am on June 15th.
