Resting at the base of a valley famous for holding remnants of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall—a Chapel of Sound. Deftly evoking its natural surroundings, this small semi-outdoor concert hall pursues the experience of sound in its purest form—collecting, reflecting, and resonating nature itself.
Pinghe Bibliotheater is the core of OPEN’s latest project—School as Village/Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School. A library, a theater, and a black box interlock together like a Chinese puzzle to form this characteristic building that some call ‘the blue whale’ while others see it an ocean liner. The unique form of the building and the free-flowing spaces not only cultivate the students’ interests in reading and performing, but also encourage their imagination to roam freely in the ocean of knowledge.
Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School is a dynamic campus that redefines the very essence of learning environments. Comprising a 24-class kindergarten, a 30-class primary school, and a 24-class junior high school, it challenges the conventional K-12 educational paradigms in China, where scale and uniformity often overshadow the nuances and sensitivities required for young learners.
School As a Village
Balance on the Cliff
In tandem with China’s economic boom and rapid urbanization, theaters have sprung up throughout the country in the past decade. Most have extravagant exteriors, but are often spatially monotonous and far detached from the general public and everyday urban life, greatly underutilizing the tremendous public resources invested in them.
Along the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River, five decommissioned aviation fuel tanks once stood abandoned on a dilapidated industrial site. Today, these tanks and the surrounding site—forgotten relics of the city's former Longhua Airport—have been given new life and relevancy. Over the course of six years, together with the newly created underground space that connects the tanks, and two separate gallery spaces dotted in the surrounding landscape, these iconic tanks were transformed from fuel containers into a vibrant new art and cultural center.
When humanity is forced to settle on Mars, might we at last rethink the way we live today?
Two art museums on a quiet beach along the coast of Bohai Bay in northern China: one hidden in the sand dunes, like mysterious caves; one rising out of the sea, like a solitary rock. A long walkway in between connects the sand and the sea, the art and the people. The two museums create a silent dialogue by the sea.
On a quiet beach along the coast of northern China’s Bohai Bay, the UCCA Dune Art Museum is carved into the sand, where it gently disappears.
去探索建筑与产品融合的可能;
去探索设计可以如何影响与引导未来的生活;
This is an exceptional exhibition design, fittingly corresponds to the large-scale group exhibition’s theme: The New Normal.
This is an art installation OPEN designed for the “Soul of City” Exhibition at Marmomac 2017, which invited designers from seven different countries to collaborate with some of Italy’s finest stone manufacturers and interpret their own understanding of the given theme, using a single building material – natural stone. The exhibition would only last four days, and stone is a rather heavy building material.
